SOLUTION OF ALGEBRAIC EQUATIONS IN L. EULER’S “UNIVERSAL ARITHMETIC”
Abstract
Leonhard Euler’s work “Universal arithmetic” (1768—1769) took a special place in the educational literature of the XVIII century and influenced the educational works of the XIX century. This work was an algebra book, which became the prototype for further textbooks on the subject. It sets out basic algebra, the theory of logarithms and the theory of equations up to the fourth degree. This article is devoted to one of the sections of the work “On algebraic equations”. The main methods of solving linear and quadratic equations and systems of linear equations with several variables are given. The article studies and analyzes the methods of solving equations of the highest degrees, as well as discloses the Euler’s method to solve equations of the 4-th degree better known as “solution of Descartes — Euler”.Key words
