PERIODICAL PRESS AS INSTRUMENT OF GENERATING PUBLIC OPINION IN EARLY XX CENTURY (BY THE EXAMPLE OF PLAY “SMUGGLERS”)

Abstract

The article is dedicated to the problem of generating public opinion in mass media. The scandal that happened during the performance staged by the play “Smugglers” in the Maly Theatre sparked public attention and caused the ban of the newspaper “The North Courier”. The editor of the newspaper “The North Courier” was married to the actress who refused to star in the play. The chronological scope of the study begins from the first article about the play in mass media (November 15, 1900) till the the ban of the newspaper “The North Courier” (December 22, 1900).
