ACTIVITIES OF CORRECTIVE LABOR CAMPS AND COLONIES IN SOUTHERN URALS DURING GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR

Abstract

The article discusses the activities of corrective labor camps and colonies of the South Ural region during the Great Patriotic War. On the basis of archival materials it characterizes the public and health status of these corrective labor institutions. It is shown that poor nutrition, unsanitary conditions of detention and overcrowding of prisoners led to the spread of epidemics and increased mortality. It is proved that during war the issues related to operational accounting of contingent were not paid enough attention to. The data on the number of prisoners in labor camps and colonies did not often tally with the factual presence of these troops. All categories of special contingent were considered by the state primarily as a resource of solving production problems.

Key words

Corrective labor camps and prison, prisoners, special contingent, labor mobilized, forced labor, the Great Patriotic War, the Southern Urals, the NKVD.
