LABOUR SERVICE OF FOREIGN WAR PRISONERS IN LOGGING INDUSTRY OF UDMURTIA DURING 1942—1947
Abstract
The author examines the labour activity of foreign prisoners of war (POW) from the armies of Hitler’s military alliance in the timber industry of Udmurtia during 1942—1947. The article does not claim to be complete, however highlights the underexplored regional and Soviet history. The vast examination of the archival material allows to form an opinion about the life and labour days of war prisoners involved in logging.
The article tells about the objectives the supervisors of war prisoners at the logging areas were set. These objectives involved worthy contribution to the supply of Izhevsk military plants with fuel wood.
The article deals with the industrial problems the supervisors of inmates faced. The causes of their low labour productivity are revealed. The article contains the data about the quantity of war prisoners accommodated in camp № 155 and those who worked in a forest. It allows to realize the scale of POW labour in the production of wood fuel for the factories that produced arms and refined steel.
The kinds of labour activity of war prisoners are enumerated. The author dwells on the wage of war prisoners and work hours. The article reveals the problem of reluctance of some former soldiers of Hitler’s military alliance to fulfil the labour norms including the cases of sabotage.
The author states the shortage of experience in using POW labour in logging in Udmurtia and sees it as the main reason for the problems occurring with producing wood fuel.
