CHANGES IN THE PRODUCTION OF ARTILLERY GUNS IN THE URALS IN LATE 1850-s — EARLY 1860-s
Abstract
The article analyzes the reasons and main trends of changes in the structure of artillery guns production at the state-owned mining plants of the Urals. It shows how the arms race, institutional relations and advances in technology affect this process. The post-reform state mining plants are concluded to have failed to maintain the monopoly over the supply of the army and the Navy with iron and steel guns. However, the army and the Navy managed to get the artillery, meeting the highest requirements of the time. At the same time Russia tightened its grip on the image of a great power which had been loosened due to the defeat in the Crimean war.
