CAUSES, CONDUCTING AND RESULTS OF THE ANTI-ALCOHOL CAMPAIGN OF 1985—1988 IN THE URALS

Abstract

The article considers the anti-alcohol campaign of 1985—1988 by the example of the Ural regions and republics. It introduces into scientific use a large array of publicly unavailable statistical data on the growing problem of alcoholism in the population of the Ural regions by the beginning of perestroika, on conducting the anti-alcohol campaign and its results. The author questions some common facts of historiography. The given analysis showed that the number of intoxication cases, including alcohol ones, decreased. Budget losses were not as significant as is commonly believed, and were partially offset by other profits. The sugar deficit was caused not only by home-brewing, but by the increased demand of the summer visitors. All in all, the campaign improved the health of the population, but caused resentment on the part of the society, which is why it was cancelled.

Key words

Anti-alcohol campaign, demographic processes, the Urals.
