OLD BELIEVERS OF OMUTNINSK FACTORY IN PRE-REFORM VYATKA PROVINCE (LATE 18th — EARLY 19th CENTURIES)
Abstract
The article examines the status of Old Believers in the Russian Empire in the pre-reform period by the example of the Omutninsk private mining factory of the Vyatka province. This factory community was the center of nonconformity in the Kama-Vyatka region, since here the Old Believers prevailed in the population structure. The article focuses on changes in the conditions of life of the Old Believers in Omutninsk in the context of a common confessional and family policy. The study is based on archival documents. The author draws the conclusion that the Old Believers working at the factory belonged to the social category of serf factory peasants and mainly to a more radical sect of the Old Belief which rejected the church’s sacraments and refused to pray for the tsar and his family. The situation of the Old Believers was relatively satisfactory in the 18th and early 19th centuries, when the Ural mining industry was being staffed and the owners of the factories needed new labour force. However, cruel state policy of Nicholas I towards the sectarians led to the deterioration in living conditions of Old Believers of the mining department.
