HISTORY OF THE PESHEKHONOVS MERCHANT DYNASTY — MAJOR LEATHER SHOE INDUSTRY ENTREPRENEURS IN THE KAMA-VYATKA REGION (THE 17th — 20th CENTURIES)

Abstract

The history of the life activity of Sarapul merchants Peshehonovs is a classic example of traditional merchant dynasty formation in the province, when the capital accumulation and its implementation into industrial production used to take about 150 years. As a rule, this category of merchandise dates back to farmers of the late 18th century transitioning to lower-middle class, and then in the first half of the 19th century turning into to the proper merchant class. The primary capital accumulation was based on buying and selling grain and on non-agricultural activities such as carrier’s trade and craft. Most often investing the accumulated funds into industrial production was observed in the first half of the 19th century, afterwards going through the classic path of development: craft — small-scale commodity shop — manufactory — factory. A dynasty’s success was determined by founding a trading house which, in this case, turned into a joint-stock company. A crucial part in the preservation and flourishing of the Peshekhonovs was played by the gender factor, the presence of smart and talented women with the strong character in the family. The use of a wide range of sources with the presence of identical studies of entrepreneur dynasties in the Kama region allows us to generalize the conclusions relating to traditional merchants using the example of the Peshekhonovs dynasty.
