MEDICAL ASSISTANCE TO THE SETTLERS AND THE LOCAL POPULATION OF THE ORENBURG PROVINCE DURING THE FAMINE OF 1921—1922
Abstract
The article touches upon the relevant topic of the activities of Soviet governmental institutions and regional health authorities in the extreme conditions of the famine of 1921—1922, which caused a wave of cholera epidemic and then parasitic typhus. The activities of the health authorities were complicated by the influx of refugees and immigrants, which contributed to the increase in the number of cases during this period. The health-care network of the Orenburg province did not meet the existing requirements, so the health care authorities quickly had to deploy additional treatment facilities and take measures to isolate the infected people from the bulk of the population. These activities were carried out in the conditions of severe shortage of food, medical linen, equipment, medicines, food, fuel, lighting and financial resources.
