THE IDEA OF SLAVIC UNITY AND ITS REFLECTION IN POLICY TOWARDS SLAVIC PRISONERS OF WAR IN ORENBURG PROVINCE DURING WWI

Abstract

By the example of Orenburg province the authors of the article show the reflection of the idea of Slavic unity in the politics of Slavic prisoners of war. This work is the result of the efforts of military and local authorities, Orenburg Diocese and non-governmental organizations of the Slavic charitable society.
The differentiating approach “Slavs vs. non-Slavs” to the accommodation of prisoners of war, their housekeeping and labor conditions was one of the components of this policy. The Orenburg province mostly adhered to this principle, especially when using the labour of war prisoners to benefit the economy of the region. The ideological and political work was also subordinated to the goal of a positive perception of Russia and a benevolent attitude towards it from Slavic prisoners of war.

Key words

The First World War, the Slavic unity, Slavic prisoners of war, Austro-Hungary, Germany, Orenburg province.
