SUCCESSFUL START: “SILVA” — THE FIRST MOVIE AND A VISITING CARD OF URAL CINEMATOGRAPHY
Abstract
The author of the article turns to the phenomenon of Ural cinematography and its roots. The development of this regional film production center is associated with the period of Great Patriotic War. By this time the Soviet cinematography had got the status of the “most important of arts in the country”. The cinematography served the purposes of supporting and preserving the ruling regime.
The article shows the production of the first movie at Sverdlovsk film studio — from the birth of idea of film production to the release of the movie. The article pays special attention to the reception of the movie, the screen life of which began during the late Stalinism. Post-war years were marked by the beginning of a large-scale ideological campaign. In addition, Central Committee of VCP(b) issued a number of resolutions that determined the development of Soviet culture and art. In this regard, the article describes the reaction towards “Silva” demonstrated by the authorities and society. The article also tries to explain the reasons for the public success of the screen adaptation of the operetta, which became possible in spite of official estimates of the movie. The article concludes that contradictory nature of Stalin’s cultural policy affected the post distribution of “Silva”, as well as the fate of Sverdlovsk film studio.
