ETHNIC MIGRATION IN UDMURTIA IN 1970—1980s: HISTORICAL-STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

Abstract

The article shows the possibility of studying ethnic migration by the local statistical sources. Based on the unpublished materials of the population censuses and current statistics the magnitude and direction of the territorial movements of the Russians, the Udmurts, the Tatars, the Ukrainians, the Mari in Udmurtia are analyzed. The numbers of all these ethnic groups arriving in Udmurtia in the 1970—1980-ies were bigger than the numbers leaving the Republic. A large proportion of migrants were the Ukrainians and the Tatars, while the most autochthonous were the Udmurts. The majority of migrants went to the cities. The migration surplus of the Republic in the period under review declined sharply. The population exchange was carried out mainly within the boundaries of RSFSR, mostly withthe neighboring republics and regions. The migration abroad or to the Federal Republic was minimal. Internal migration flows (mainly the Mari and the Udmurts) came from the countryside to the city. The amount of internal migration decreased gradually, but not as much as that of the external migration. The Udmurts moved much more active than the Russians within the Republic of Udmurtia. The age structure of Russian and Udmurt migrants is also analyzed.
