THE CONDITION OF THE MATERIAL AND TECHNICAL FACILITIES OF COLLECTIVE FARMS IN SOUTHERN URALS (1953—1964)

Abstract

The article analyzes the state and further development of the material and technical facilities of the collective farms in the Southern Urals during the thaw period, closely related to the activities of machine and tractor stations (MTS), which remained the main link in the material and technical base of agriculture until their reorganization in March 1958. 1957 witnessed the curtailment of material and technical facilities and social infrastructure in the construction program of MTS in line with the decision of Khrushchev to reorganize MTS, which actually led to their liquidation. Despite the fact that the direct agricultural producer received the equipment at his disposal and the contradiction between the two agricultural producers was eliminated, the reform resulted in a number of negative consequences: the need to purchase equipment from the MTS led to an increase in the collective farms’ debts to the state, wages for workdays decreased, skilled machine operators were irrevocably lost for villages, as they moved to the cities, and the agricultural machinery purchased by the collective farms went unserviceable due to the decrease in maintenance quality.
