EVOLUTION OF THE CORONATION CEREMONY OF RUSSIAN MONARCHS IN THE SECOND HALF OF XVI CENTURY
Abstract
The article discusses the history of the coronation ceremony. It analyzes the coronation of Ivan IV Vasilyevich and Fyodor Ivanovich and reveals the reasons and the nature of changes made to the coronation ceremony of Russian tsars. The author suggests the principle to systematize these changes. The given paper applied the historical-genetic, historical and comparative, structural and typological research methods. The analysis of the database let the authors conclude on two ambivalent characteristics of the coronation ceremony evolution. On the one hand, the ceremony was to ensure the continuity and prevent innovations and on the other hand, it was exposed to changes influenced by dynastic and political turbulence. The amendments to the enthronement procedure were made mainly in two directions. Firstly, the legitimacy principle of royal succession and transition of the due regalia, titles and powers was updated. Secondly, the adjustments were introduced to fully express the essence and character of the royal power. The results of this study may serve as material for further studies of royal power ideology and its many forms of representation.
