FIGHTING FOR THE DON BRIDGEHEADS: AUGUST — SEPTEMBER 1942

Abstract

The article, based on archival documents and recollections of participants, considers the development of the Soviet troops military actions to capture and hold the bridgeheads on the right bank of the Don in the Voronezh region in the summer and autumn of 1942 in the location of the 2nd Hungarian Army. During the two-month fierce battles for bridgeheads, Soviet troops successfully repelled numerous enemy attacks and inflicted heavy losses on him. The task put in July by the German command before the 2nd Hungarian army to clear the west bank of the Don of the Soviet troops was executed neither in August, nor in September, nor in the next months. The formation of these bridgeheads had grave consequences for the Hungarian troops in the course of the Red Army offensive which started in January of 1943 and finished with the complete defeat of the Hungarian Second Army.

Key words
