GROUND VEGETATION OF THE PINE FOREST AFFECTED BY FOREST FIRES IN THE GRADIENT OF EMISSIONS OF THE KARABASH COPPER SMELTER
Abstract
The authors compared the significance of two factors of the condition of ground vegetation: industrial pollution and ground forest fires. For that reason the α-diversity and the abundance of the grass-shrub and moss layer were estimated at 19 constant sites in pine forests of the Southern Urals. 11 sites were located near the Karabash Copper Smelter and 8 ones in the areas of Ilmen State Nature Reserve. All sites were grouped into two groups based on the fire damage features: damage by ground forest fires (burnt 7—14 years ago) and not damaged for a long time (burnt 23—48 years ago). Industrial pollution was established as the main cause for the variability in the condition of ground vegetation. It entails 41—72% of variance in the studied characteristics of ground vegetation. The variability of the condition of grass-shrub and moss layer associated with fire damage is 3—7 times less.
