DEPICTION OF DAILY BUSINESS LIFE OF WOMEN FROM THE MERCHANT CLASS IN RUSSIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY FROM 19th CENTURY TO 21st CENTURY
Abstract
The article provides the analysis of works depicting everyday business life of women from Russian merchant class during the period of Great reforms. The works written during the pre-revolutionary and Soviet periods contain little information on that topic, due to which the article is mainly focused on the post-Soviet historical works. The studies of the development of private enterprise in pre-Soviet times were resumed in the 1990s with the transition from the planned economy to the market economy. The authors examine the issues of bourgeois modernization of the Russian Empire in the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century through the research of the activities of various notable merchant enterprises as elements of a capitalist system. However, historians mostly focus on the business activity of the male merchants since they were considerably wealthier than the female merchants in Russia and, therefore, they played a greater role in the process of restructuring Russian economy according to the Western model. Only in the beginning of the 21st century business life of women from merchant class became a more common object of research for the historians from different regions of Russia. The analysis of the already existing body of works on this subject is presented in this article and makes it possible to talk about the national and regional characteristics of the women’s merchant business.
