DISPLAY OF DISCONTENT BY THE PARTICIPANTS OF PUGACHEV’S REBELLION IN THE URAL REGION CONCERNING ORTHODOX CHURCH AND ITS REPRESENTATIVES (1773—1774)

Abstract

This article considers the events of Pugachev’s rebellion, which showed the negative attitude of its participants to the church authorities, based on the materials of spiritual boards of Russian Orthodox Church of the Ural Region. Terror towards priests was implemented with extreme violence and cruelty in the lands of compact settlement of the Bashkirs, Russian Old Believers, and Yaik Cossacks. On the contrary, in those areas where the population interceded for clergy or priests showed humility and recognized the newly appeared Emperor, their lives were preserved, and churches could not be exposed even to plunder. The fact of participation of national lower masses in violence against clergy and defilement of temples demonstrated a certain discredit of Russian Orthodox Church as a state institution in public consciousness.

Key words

Clergy, Old Believers, church, rebellion, terror, defilement.
