FAMILY LIFE OF MERCHANT WOMEN IN POST-REFORM RUSSIA: HISTORIOGRAPHY OF THE PROBLEM

Abstract

The article provides an overview of various opinions of Russian historians from 19th century to 20th century on family relationships in the daily life of women from the Russian merchant class in the second half of the 19th century. Traditional and new approaches to the analysis of their family life are compared. The author points out that traditional description of family life and behavior of women from merchant class (that they were all underprivileged, downtrodden, ignorant and indolent, that the family life was isolated, and family relations were ritualized) is gradually replaced in the historical literature by new, more objective evaluations. Scholars nowadays talk more often that merchant women had some degree of freedom when choosing a life partner and a model of intra-family behavior, and that a gradual transition to a nuclear family and an increase in the degree of publicity of family relations took place during that period. The article highlights the most studied aspects of the everyday family life of women-merchants in the post-reform period as well as those aspects that could be promising subjects of further historical study.

Key words

Post-reform period, daily life, family, townspeople, merchantry, historiography, gender differences.
