BUDDHIST RITUALS IN THE RUSSIAN-KALMYK SHERT-OATHS AND TREATIES OF THE 17th — EARLY 18th CENTURIES
Abstract
The article deals with the use of traditional Buddhist rituals and legitimation in Russian-Kalmyk shert-oaths and treaties of the 17—18th centuries. It determines the importance of the religious component in the Russian tradition of the 15—17th centuries donation and its use by the Russian authorities to intensify the diplomatic process. The main stages of the spread of Buddhist ritual in the Russian-Kalmyk diplomatic interaction in the 17—18th centuries are singled out during the political integration of the Kalmyk people into the Russian state. At the first stage, during the formation of the Kalmyk Khanate (30th of the 17th century), Buddhist rituals were used along with pre-Buddhist ritual elements (sacrifice, oaths on arms). The intensification of the spread of the Buddhism in the Kalmyk Khanate leads to a decrease in the use of the pre-Buddhist ritual in the shert-oaths of the 50s—70s XVII century, which determined the political status of the Khanate. During the period of the formation of the Russian Empire (end of the XVII—XVIII centuries) in the new system of record keeping, the significance of religious rites in the Russian-Kalmyk interaction was significantly reduced.
