THE CHINESE IN THE FOCUS OF REPRESSION OF THE GREAT TERROR IN SIBERIA AND THE FAR EAST

Abstract

The article is devoted to carrying out the mass all-Union repressive operation against the Chinese population. The punitive action was carried out by the NKVD of the USSR in July 1937 — November 1938. The aim of the article is to reveal the specifics and extent of the repression against this ethnic group for Siberia and the Far East. The article is based on the departmental documentation of the NKVD of the USSR, the decisions of extrajudicial instances and stopped archival-investigatory files of the Great Terror period. On the expiry of the 75-year period these documents entered the public domain, which provided for the conclusions of the scale and specifics of repressions against this ethnic group in the eastern regions of the USSR. The most of the Chinese were accused of Japanese espionage and convicted under order No. 00593 of September 20, 1937 (“Harbinian” operations). Overall, it can be concluded that a large-scale repressive operation was implemented during the Great Terror in the USSR, which resulted in a significant decline of the Chinese diaspora in the country.

Key words

Diaspora, the Chinese, the Great Terror, “national” operations, “Harbinian” order, deportation, exile.
