IN THE BATTLES FOR MOUNTAIN PASSAGES: THE OFFENSIVE OF THE 1ST GUARDS ARMY DURING THE CARPATHIAN-UZHGOROD FRONT OPERATION (SEPTEMBER — OCTOBER 1944)
Abstract
During September 9 — October 28, 1944, the troops of the 4th Ukrainian Front, overcoming the fierce resistance of the enemy, approached the Main Carpathian Range, overcame it and descended the southern slopes of the Carpathians. The main role was played by the military operations of the 1st Guards Army, whose troops crossed the Czechoslovak border on September 20, initiating the liberation of Czechoslovakia from the Nazis, and by October 28, 1944, seized the Russian Pass and left wing descended to the Hungarian plain. The army’s actions contributed to the successes of the central and left-flank offensive groups of the Fourth Ukrainian Front, liberating Sighet, Mukachevo and Uzhgorod. At the same time, army did not reach the line specified by the Supreme Command Headquarters despite the monthly delay, therefore, in general, the task of the operation was not solved, the main reason for which were the objective difficulties associated with the specifics of conducting offensive operations in mountain-woodland conditions.
