SIBERIAN ATAMANS IN THE 17th CENTURY (TO THE SOCIAL PORTRAIT OF SIBERIAN MILITARY LEADERS)
Abstract
The paper presents the reconstruction of a Siberian ataman portrait during the early stage of Siberia development. Based on the documentary sources and historiography, the paper reveals the composition and origin of Siberian atamans, the order of their appointment, their serving practice and participation in social events. The multifunctional and universal nature of their activities is marked, which showed the close connection of the performance of military duties with the administrative and economic activities. It has been shown that the atamans, being the conductors of government decisions, played an important role in the leadership of the military units of the Siberian garrisons. In social issues they persistently defended the priority of the Cossack “army” in management and achieved some success. Their activities left a significant mark in the process of accession and development of the vast region.
