HOOLIGANISM AS A CRIME AND A FORM OF DEVIANT LEISURE IN THE SOVIET UNION OF THE 1920s
Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of hooliganism in the USSR during the 1920s. The article also provides the analysis of the emergence and spread of hooliganism in pre-revolutionary Russia, the peculiarities of its transformation during the Soviet period. Special attention is paid to the attitude of the government, professional scientists and society. Having considered the most common types of hooliganism, the author comes to the conclusion that due to the extremely blurred definition the interpretation of the term “hooliganism” could vary significantly. Under the propagandistic campaigns, arranged by the Soviet authorities, the notion “hooliganism” expanded, thus including a wide range of actions, not all of which could be considered criminal. In this regard, they should be considered as a form of deviant leisure, anti-social but not always dangerous entertainment that was well accepted and tolerated by society.
