SIBERIAN MERCHANTS IN THE PERCEPTION OF FOREIGNERS (the 18th — 19th CENTURIES)
Abstract
The article is devoted to the analysis of the ideas of foreigners, mainly Western European and American travelers, about Siberian merchants of the 18th — 19th centuries. Foreign authors noted the importance of trade for the economic development of Siberia, emphasized the role of merchants in the supply of the population of the vast territory of the Asian part of Russia with different goods. Special attention was paid to the outstanding representatives of merchantry, who were distinguished not only by their wealth, but also by their broad outlook and brilliant education. Foreigners spoke about the friendliness and hospitality of Siberian merchants, at the same time they saw such peculiar features as suspicion, craftiness and dishonest practices in their commercial activities.
