CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES OF THE PROVINCIAL RUSSIAN MERCHANTS IN THE SPHERE OF ORGANIZATION OF ASSISTANCE TO EXISTING AND FORMER PARTICIPANTS OF MILITARY OPERATIONS (ON THE EXAMPLE OF THE ORENBURG AND UFA PROVINCES IN THE XIX CENTURY)

Abstract

Based on archival materials, the article shows the army support provided by philanthropists of the Orenburg and Ufa provinces in the nineteenth century, who actively participated in the free supply of provisions to the troops, gathered and sent recruits to the people’s militia, and also created hospices for the crippled warriors. Representatives of the merchants provided substantial financial support not only to current and former participants of military operations, but also to members of their families, including orphans whose fathers died on the battlefield. They encountered difficulties in obtaining full information about the place of residence of the dead and deceased military officers when distributing collected charitable funds, and in the provision of benefits to widows and orphans residing in the province. The merchants promoted the development of the local health system with the help of the Society for the Care of the Wounded and Sick Warriors by training qualified minor medical staff members who due to their mobility were actively used in the period of epidemics, skirmishes and various cataclysms in the province. In this way, provincial merchants have benefited not only the state, but also the social life of their province through the organization of assistance to existing and former participants of military operations.
