INSTITUTION FOR PRISONERS OF WAR AND INTERNEES IN UDMURT ASSR IN 1942—1949: NUMBER, LOCATION, MORTALITY CONTINGENT

Abstract

The article presents the data about the number of Main Directorate camps for prisoners of war and the interned (MDPI) of NKVD of the USSR, separate working battalions of the USSR Ministry of Defense (MD) and special hospitals of People’s Commissariat of Health (PCH) of the USSR located in the territory of the Udmurt Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. The article contains the information about the deployment of the above-mentioned institutions, chronology of their work and the death rate of prisoners of war and internees as well as the current state of their burial places. It is established that there were five camps of MDPI , three separate working battalions of MD and six special hospitals of PCH in the territory of the Udmurt ASSR during the period of 1942—1948. Special hospital No 3888 had functioned there for a long time, before it was closed on June 1, 1949. According to the incomplete data, 3679 prisoners of war and internees died during their stay in Udmurtia. It is shown that more than 70,0% of them were Germans. Dead foreign citizens are buried at 15 special cemeteries with the status of military burial place. For the time being, five foreign military cemeteries have been restored within the territory of the Udmurt Republic. This is done by the German People’s Union for the care of the military graves. In addition, seven memorial signs are installed by Hungary at the burial places of foreign prisoners of war and interned citizens, three by Italy and one by Romania.
