READING HUTS AS A CENTER OF ENLIGHTENMENT OF THE RURAL POPULATION OF THE SOUTHERN URALS REGIONS IN THE 1930s
Abstract
In the 1930s the Soviet government paid much attention to the propaganda work in the countryside, which was conducted by employees of cultural and educational institutions. The article analyzes the state and further development of the reading huts in the Southern Ural regions as centers of education and propaganda in rural areas. The regional historiography paid little attention to this problem. It is proved that unlike Orenburg, the Chelyabinsk region possessed a more extensive network of reading huts. The main forms of work in the reading huts of the region are considered: a loud reading of newspapers and fiction, designed for illiterate visitors, reading conferences, booksellers, etc. The main problems of the reading huts are revealed: insufficient funding, use of club buildings in a number of settlements as storage facilities for grain; weak equipment, etc. The personnel problem remained the most acute. Nevertheless, the mass work of this politico-ideological institution has become decisive in the formation of a Soviet citizen.
