«…THE SERVANTS, WHO ARE EXTREMELY SPOILED HERE, LIVE IN THEIR OWN WAY». FEMALE DOMESTIC WORKERS IN THE PROVINCE DURING THE POST-REFORM PERIOD
Abstract
The article is focused on domestic work service as a field of employment for townswomen of the post-reform period. It is based mostly on the information about Orenburg Governorate in the 19th and 20th centuries. Statistical data, narratives, archival documents, periodicals of the beginning of the 20th century, works of fiction are used as sources for this study. It is primarily focused on the occupational activities in the everyday life of female domestic workers. The author states that there was a high percentage of female workers in this field of employment. The study uncovers sources of conflicts between servants and employers, difficulties and problems associated with the professional activity of servants. It is concluded that there were significant differences in the everyday life of different categories of domestic workers.
