HORSE TESTING SYSTEM AT THE GENERAL DIRECTORATE OF STATE HORSE BREEDING (1843—1917)
Abstract
The Department of State horse breeding was established in 1843. The functions of the new department were to improve the equine economy of the Russian Empire in accordance with the needs of the economy. The activities of the General Directorate of State horse breeding on the organization of horse tests, which were one of the incentive measures for horse breeding, are studied on the basis of archival, record, reference, periodical and journalistic sources. The author highlights the testing of peasant horses, which were aimed at confirming the working qualities of a horse in agriculture. Particular attention is drawn to the work of the General Directorate of State horse breeding on organizing competitions of thoroughbred horses, which formed the basis of the breeding horses stock in the Russian Empire. The characteristic is given to the requirements that were imposed on horse owners when admitting to testing in race and trotting horse societies.
