THE AGRICULTURE OF COLLECTIVE FARMS IN THE CENTRAL BLACK EARTH REGION OF RUSSIA DURING KHRUSHCHEV’S REFORMS
Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of land use culture of collective farms of the Black Earth Center of Russia during the period of N. S. Khrushchev’s reforms. The focal point of the survey is the question of implementing the achievements of agronomy — cultural land-use — into manufacturing practices. The paper is based on the problematic-chronological approach. It demonstrates the contradictory nature of the government reforms in the agricultural sector of the economy as well as the causes of their inefficiency. It is argued that despite the sufficient financial, material and technical resources of the Soviet state, the potential of the collective farm economy was not realized not only because of the shortage of agricultural tools and machinery, or inadequate motivation and rewards system, but also due to neglecting the basic rules of crop farming. Khrushchev’s impulsiveness was reflected in the adoption of party-state decisions that concerned the fundamentals of land use and the structure of crop rotation, the location of crops, etc.
