EVERYDAY LIFE OF THE FIRST BUILDERS OF GAY MINING AND PROCESSING PLANT IN THE TENT CAMP (1958—1959 YEARS)

Abstract

The article dwells on the main aspects of the daily life of first builders of Gay mining and processing plant. The study is based on the recollections of the first builders who had to face life in Gay tent camp. The analysis of archival sources, especially Komsomol and trade union documents was made. The daily concerns of residents about nutrition, personal hygiene, maintaining public order in the tent camp are presented. As part of everyday life, the forms of leisure of young builders are considered: concerts with the participation of professional artists and amateur performances, dancing, visiting the library. It is concluded that the daily life of the first builders depended in many respects on the general state of the country’s construction industry, which was at an early stage of industrial development, when heavy physical labor was still in demand. The microenvironment of the labor collective of builders of the plant was in many ways extreme. However, the working and living conditions of people here were constantly improving. In the spiritual sense, the majority of young men and women in construction were optimistic about the future and had a high moral potential. The activity and understanding by young people of the importance of their work made it possible to put into operation the required amount of housing and, by the beginning of winter 1959, significantly improve the living conditions of the Gay first builders.

Key words
