THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION, PARISH AND SUNDAY SCHOOLS IN THE SAMARA DIOCESE IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE XIX — EARLY XX CENTURY
Abstract
The article studies the problems of theological and church education in the Samara diocese in 1851—1917, it proves that the level of education determined the qualification of the clergyman, influenced the quality of teaching, liturgical and missionary activities. The problems of the formation and development of the Samara Theological Seminary are analyzed. It is alleged that in the Samara diocese all the religious educational institutions that existed in the Russian Empire functioned successfully, with the exception of the theological academy: a seminary, religious and parochial schools, parochial schools, literacy schools, Sunday schools, church-teacher schools, functioned successfully in the Samara Diocese. It should be borne in mind that the theological seminary and schools gave not only theological, but also general education, since the subjects there were only half theological, half general education. Thus, a continuous chain of spiritual education was realized: after graduating from a theological school, a young man entered a theological seminary, and then could enter a theological academy — a higher educational spiritual institution. If desired, after graduating from the seminary, one could enter the university. During the period under review the state encouraged and, since 1896 funded the creation of an elementary education level: parish schools and literacy schools. The work convincingly proves the necessity of creating such schools in the Russian outback, since due to the shortage of funds it was impossible to provide primary education to the vast majority of the population of the Russian Empire.
