MOUNDS IN THE VICINITY OF VERKHNYAYA KARDAILOVKA VILLAGE ON THE URAL RIVER (BASED ON THE EXCAVATIONS OF 1993) AND NOTES ON THE CHRONOLOGY OF SUPPORTING COMPLEXES OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE 4th CENTURY B.C.

Abstract

The article dwells on the finds from two mounds of the early nomads’ epoch in the Southern Trans-Urals. Blade weapons of “transitional” types found in these mounds make it possible to return to the problem of chronology of complexes with similar swords and daggers. The analysis showed a stable relationship between swords and daggers with obtuse and arched crosshairs, with straight crosshairs and straight tops in combination with a specific set of objects in particular, such as two types of mirrors (5.3 by A. S. Skripkin and “Temir”) and ceramic vessels with a high cannulated neck. Besides, there is every reason to believe that early forms of blades with a typical “Prokhorovka” handle appeared not later than the last quarter of the 4th century B. C. and coexisted with the above mentioned types for a short time.

Key words

The Southern Trans-Urals, early nomads, burial rite, mounds, blade weapons, ceramic vessels, arrowheads, chronology.
