THE SOCIAL SPHERE OF THE URAL RAILWAY TRANSPORT IN 1956—1991: HOUSING PROBLEM
Abstract
The article analyzes the policy of the Soviet state to provide housing for railway workers in the Urals. The necessity and timeliness of mass housing construction in connection with the staffing of the intensive modernization of the railway transport of the Urals is shown. The policy adopted by the state to provide every family with a comfortable apartment for the railroad worker contributed to the strengthening of modernization processes in the railway transport and the growth of labor productivity, but the pace of housing construction was slow due to insufficient allocation of material and financial resources. The shortage of comfortable housing on the railways was intensified by the transfer of a significant part of the housing stock to local councils, the Ministry of Defense and its redistribution in favor of transport new buildings. The great achievements in housing construction were the increase in the availability of individual housing for railway workers, the elimination of barracks and dilapidated housing, a significant increase in living space per worker.
