REGIONAL FEATURES OF THE ACTIVITY OF PUPILS’ LABOR SQUADS IN RUSSIA DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR

Abstract

During the First World War in Russia, the practice of providing labor assistance in the farms of conscripts’ families by the forces of students became widespread. The article analyzes the regional specifics of the formation, financing, work and everyday life of pupils’ labor squads. Typical aspects that are characteristic of this movement everywhere are also highlighted. In most regions, the initiative came from the public organizations, which directly affected the funding and, as a result, the number of formed squads and the scale of assistance provided. The administrative resource provided an increase in the productivity of this movement. The specifics could be explained by the agricultural specialization of the regions, as well as the daily life of peasants in a particular area. Among the typical features of this movement we note the principle of charity and free work. There was widespread distrust on the part of the peasantry of the vigilantes themselves, an alien urban element and the labor potential of the squads, which consisted of the youth untrained and unaccustomed to rural work.
