THE IMAGE OF THE “NEW MAN” IN SOVIET CINEMA IN THE 1930s
Abstract
In the 1920—1930s Soviet authorities launched a large-scale project to create a “new man” aimed at the formation of his spiritual, moral and physical characteristics essential for the stability of the regime. The Bolsheviks actively implanted the image of the “new man” — an athlete, a hard worker, a defender warrior — into mass consciousness by means of motion pictures considered one of the most effective propaganda tools. A characteristic feature of the movies of the 1930s in the genre of socialist realism was a demonstration of the physicality of “new people” and the presentation of new types of socialist leisure in the framework of the ideological model of “life has become better, life has become more. Physical education and sports as one of the forms of leisure of Soviet people, contributing to the creation of an ideal physical appearance and the development of the necessary moral qualities, was reflected in the first sports film “Goalkeeper” and in numerous other movie episodes demonstrating sports events (competitions, sports parades etc.). The article analyzes the main features of a new type of person and new types of sports and public leisure, reflected in the cinematographic works of the studied period.
