RAILWAY TRANSPORT OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE AS A FACTOR OF MODERNIZATION IN PRE-REVOLUTIONARY PRESS
Abstract
The article examines the entire range of railway issues that garnered media coverage in periodicals of the last third of the XIX century; the degree of public interest in these issues; the place of railway transport in everyday life of those times and the government’s attitude to the development of railway transport. The paper dwells on the presentation of the Transcaspian railway in press as on one of the factors that had a significant modernization impact on the development of the Central Asian region. Using materials from periodicals, the authors analyzed how and in which ways their pages reflected the issues of railway construction throughout the Russian Empire and in the Turkmen steppe in particular, as well as their role as a catalyst for social and economic modernization of Russia.
