A POLITICAL PORTRAIT OF THE SAMARA DEPUTIES ELECTED TO THE FIRST STATE DUMA OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE
Abstract
Based on the analysis of pre-revolutionary biographical reference books, memoirs of contemporaries, periodical and archival materials, the article considers the political and social composition of the Samara deputies of the State Duma of the Russian Empire of the first convocation. The author examines the course of the election campaign in the Samara province, reveals the factors that influenced the election of the final composition of the Duma members. The article also contains the overview of the political orientation of the elected deputies, and their social characteristics (class affiliation, occupation, education, nationality, and age). Special attention is paid to their experience in socio-political activities, which were mainly related to work in Zemstvo Councils and peasant self-government bodies. The author argues that Samara parliamentarians had no practice of participating in law-making activities. As a result, they had to master a new type of activity. The deputies also had to build a dialogue with the government, that is why the author examines the history of their relations with the authorities before being elected to the Duma and reveals that some of them had previous experience of confrontation with the authorities.
