DEVELOPMENT OF RUSSIA-CHINA TRADE RELATIONS THROUGH THE ORENBURG CUSTOMS DISTRICT IN THE LATE 40-ies — EARLY 50-ies OF THE 19th CENTURY
Abstract
In 1851 Russia and China signed the Ghulja Treaty which opened up the western China market to Russian trade. However, by the time of the conclusion of this agreement, the necessary economic prerequisites for the development of interstate trade had already developed in Central Asia. So, in the second half of the 40s of the XIX century Russian-Chinese trade was carried out through the territory of the Orenburg Customs District through the mediation of Muslim merchants. The article sets the task to consider certain elements of Russian-Chinese trade in the Central Asian region in the period before the conclusion of the Ghulja Treaty of 1851 and in the first years after. The basis for the historical analysis was the original materials of the State Archive of Orenburg Region (GAOO). Attention is paid to the facts of smuggling, statistics on trade, the structure of the merchants. The author shows historical facts testifying to the evolutionary nature of development of Russia-China trade relations in Central Asia, which determined the conclusion of the Ghulja Treaty in 1851.
