PRODUCTION OF IMMUNE SERUMS AND VACCINES AT THE BACTERIOLOGICAL INSTITUTE OF THE PERM PROVINCE ZEMSTVO (LATE 19th — EARLY 20th CENTURY)
Abstract
The article presents the history of the production of immune serums and vaccines in Bacteriological institute (laboratory until 1912 ) of the Perm zemstvo. The emergence of these institutions meant the formation of the immunobiological industry in Russia. The laboratory mastered the production of anti-rabies drugs and from 1898 to 1917 inoculated more than 2 thousand people against rabies, since 1908 it produced cholera and scarlet fever vaccines. During the First World War, the institute began to produce typhoid vaccine and smallpox detritus. The second activity of the institute was the production of antitoxic sera. The technology for producing serum against diphtheria was mastered in 1898—1900 and the volume of its production was constantly growing. Since 1910 the laboratory began to produce sera against scarlet fever and dysentery. The institute employees worked with pathogens of dangerous infections and various animals (horses, calves, rabbits) and had to constantly comply with hygienic rules and ensure the sterility of products.
