REVIEW OF THE DISSERTATION BY EVGENIYA VLADISLAVOVNA KOMLEVA “SIBERIAN MERCHANTS: SOCIO-CULTURAL PRACTICES IN THE CONTEXT OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF NORTH ASIA (LATE 18th—19th CENTURIES)” (NOVOSIBIRSK, 2020, 647 p.) SUBMITTED FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF HISTORICAL SCIENCES IN SPECIALTY 07.00.02 — DOMESTIC HISTORY

Abstract

The review article analyzes the dissertation submitted for the degree of Doctor of Historical Sciences, the defense of which took place in December 2020 at the dissertation council at the Institute of History of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Through various types of activities of the Siberian merchants in the development of North Asia (entrepreneurial, educational, charitable practices), the author traces the development of relations between merchants and the indigenous peoples of the northeastern regions of Russia in the era of the incorporation of vast expanses of North Asia into the Russian state. The wide scope of the territorial and chronological framework of the study brings the author to a completely new level of generalization regarding the socio-cultural image of the Siberian merchants, which act in this work both as a meaning-forming social group and as a translator of these meanings outward through various practices.

Key words

Merchants, Siberia, socio-cultural practices, development of territories, dissertation.
