RUSSIAN JUDAIZERS (SUBBOTNIKS) IN ORENBURG PROVINCE IN POST-REFORM PERIOD

Abstract

The article examines the Subbotnik movement in the Orenburg province in the period of 1865—1905, using archival sources and publications of the Orenburg Diocesan Gazette. The paper analyzes the methods of distribution of this sectarian trend into the territory of the region, the relationship between Subbotniks and the local Orthodox population, the peculiarities of religious practices and everyday life of the Orenburg Judaizers. It is concluded that both the neophyte subbotniks and hereditary subbotniks from among the settlers from the Saratov province belonged to the Talmudist branch and were guided by rabbinic Judaism.
