FUNCTIONING OF NEWSPAPER “DONSKIYE VOISKOVYE/OBLASTNYE VEDOMOSTI” IN 1839—1882

Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the peculiarities of functioning of “Donskiye voiskovye (since 1872 — oblastnye) vedomosti”. It is shown that the newspaper, although formally published according to the expanded program of provincial bulletins, in practice was an extremely curious phenomenon. In fact, the entire 19th century witnessed a process of searching for the optimal format of the publication, which, on the one hand, was supposed to have an official character, and on the other, for a long time remained the only stable newspaper, publishing mainly materials on local Don issues. In addition to the standard format of provincial statements (official and unofficial parts, which are of an informational, official and educational nature), the formats of a regional socio-political newspaper were proposed (such a transformation was approved by the local elite, but caused opposition to the imperial censorship) and a purely official publication that did not have an unofficial part at all. It was the latter format that turned out to be the most stable due to its low cost.
