SEMIRECHYE PROVINCE THROUGH THE EYES OF AN IMPERIAL OFFICIAL: STATE, SOCIAL AND PRIVATE ASPECTS IN THE MEMOIRS OF K. K. PAHLEN
Abstract
The main source of the article is the memoirs of Senator K. K. Pahlen, who personally toured the Turkestan Territory at the end of the first decade of the twentieth century. The use of the document allows to imagine the point of view from which high-ranking Russian officials evaluated the region, its inhabitants, the results of the implemented transformations and plans for further modernization of the region. The territorial scope of the study is limited to the province of Semirechye, inhabited by the nomadic population, the description of which clearly shows the orientalist view of the authors of the memoirs, which does not leave an opportunity for an objective perception of the realities of the Russian East. The analysis of documents in three aspects (official, individual and collective) proves the prevalence of orientalist concept in the minds of high-ranking Russian officials when planning and implementing transformations aimed at the full assimilation of Turkestan by the Russian Empire.
