URAL COSSACKS IN THE KHIVA CAMPAIGN OF 1839—1840 THROUGH THE EYES OF THE PARTICIPANTS OF THE CAMPAIGN

Abstract

The article considers the marching life of the Ural Cossacks during the winter military campaign of 1839—1840 under the command of V. A. Perovsky as an object of research. Special attention is paid to the descriptions of the Ural Cossacks made by a number of participants of the campaign, including such famous persons as V. I. Dahl and M. I. Ivanin. It is noted that in the works of pre-revolutionary authors, and first of all the direct participants in the campaign, the features and significant differences of the Ural Cossacks from other categories of the military who took part in it are well shown. An attempt is made to explain the differences in assessments of certain aspects of the problem by the authors mentioned in the article.
