CHILDREN’S PROVINCIAL READING IN THE SYSTEM OF FAMILY EDUCATION (BASED ON CHILDREN’S MAGAZINES OF THE EARLY 20th CENTURY IN ORENBURG)
Abstract
Children’s literature and children’s magazines are rarely analyzed as historical sources within the framework of historical research. However, when referring to the history of childhood or the history of children’s everyday life, it is this group of sources that makes it possible to fill in the gaps that inevitably come up in the situation of the almost complete absence of children’s narratives. In the article the author examines in detail the children’s magazines recommended for children of younger (up to 8 years old) and middle (8—12 years old) age, widely represented in Orenburg at the beginning of the 20th century. These magazines were intended primarily for family reading, which means they allow us to touch the sphere of children’s everyday life in the family. Scientific analysis is conducted using a comparative method, comparing both the issues of the same magazine from different years and content of different magazines. The article evaluates the way that magazines presented their material, its content, the specifics of the language of children’s literature. The results of this analysis allow us to identify the key educational objectives and leading educational methods that the society at the beginning of the 20th century offered to the world of adults in relation to the world of children. The author also examines the reflection on the pages of the children’s press of the most important historical events, and hence the degree of immersion of children of different ages in “adult” problems.
