THE WORLD OF DELICACIES AS A SUBJECT AREA OF CHILDREN’S EVERYDAY LIFE THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD AND TRADE AND SANITARY SERVICES OF THE CAPITAL CITIES OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE IN THE LATE XIX — EARLY XX CENTURIES

Abstract

At the end of the XIX century, the local governments of capital cities of the Russian Empire began to pay more attention to quality control of food products, including those intended for children. The clerical sources of the trade and sanitary services of St. Petersburg and Moscow analyzed in this article and sources of personal origin make it possible to compare the quality criteria of sweets important for official services and for the final consumer — a child. Manufacturers and traders used a wide arsenal of tools to attract the attention of children: an unusual form of baking, a bright color of confectionery, the possibility of using sweets for games. In pursuit of an attractive appearance of products, manufacturers, according to the conclusion of the agents of trade and sanitary supervision, used prohibited dyes, low-quality raw materials, used newspaper sheets instead of wrappers, etc. A comparison of the opinions of a child consumer and an expert agent of the trade and sanitary supervision, who monitors the quality of food products, allows us to conclude that for children it is the emotional component that is crucial in evaluating treats, including ease of purchase, decoration, versatility of using sweets, and not its quality, taste and price.

Key words

Children’s daily life, “the world of delicacies”, trade and sanitary services, metropolitan cities, culinary skills.
