THE DISPUTE BETWEEN “GRECOPHILES” AND “LATINOPHILES” ABOUT THE ESSENCE OF RAISING CHILDREN IN THE FAMILY IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE XVII CENTURY
Abstract
The article analyzes the pedagogical ideas that appeared in Russia in the second half of the XVIIth century. The purpose of the study is to analyze the original works of such authors as Epiphanius Slavinetsky, Evfimy Chudovsky, Simeon Polotsky, Karion Istomin. The study uses methods that allow assessing the pedagogical heritage of the era, based on the historical reconstruction of pedagogical phenomena and their consistent comprehension. The paper identified common features of the positions of representatives of the Byzantine-Russian direction (“Grecophiles”) and representatives of the Western-oriented direction (“Latinophiles”), as well as contradictions that allowed us to distinguish two pedagogical trends in their understanding of the essence of raising children in the family. This made it possible to conclude that the main point of their confrontation was the idea of the need to focus on the enlightenment humanistic ideas of Western pedagogy or on the domestic traditions of education in their close connection with the legacy of Byzantine authors.
