MENZELINSK GENTRY IN THE 18th — EARLY 20th CENTURY

Abstract

The Menzelinsk gentry are a small social group formed from the military of the Smolensk fortress (The Polish-Lithunian Commonwealth), resettled in 1654—1667 to the Menzelinsk Ostrog (fortress). The article highlights the history of relations between foreign-gentry and Cossacks in the 18th century, issues of legal regulation of the status of a gentry-nobles in the late 18th — early 19th centuries and their land holdings in the Menzelinsk district, gives the examples of successful integration and professional employment of the descendants of the gentry. In addition, the article includes the statistics of 1835 on the resettlement of the gentry in the Orenburg province. The documents of the Menzelinsk Museum of Local Lore illustrate the life of the gentry on the eve of 1917 and in the first Soviet years. Most of the Menzelinsk gentry retained their corporate identity for a long time. At the same time, the author concludes that over several centuries this social group has undergone class transformations: it has joined the ranks of nobility, Cossacks, peasantry and lower middle class.
